What is White Cell Count?

White blood cell count (WBC) measures the total number of white blood cells (leukocytes) circulating in your blood. White blood cells are a critical part of your immune system, helping your body fight infections and disease.

There are five main types of white blood cells: neutrophils (the most common, fighting bacteria and fungi), lymphocytes (targeting viruses and producing antibodies), monocytes (consuming foreign material), eosinophils (fighting parasites and allergic reactions), and basophils (involved in inflammatory responses).

The normal WBC range is typically 4,500 to 11,000 cells per microliter of blood in adults. Your body produces about 100 billion white blood cells every day to maintain this protective army.

Where Does White Cell Count Come From?

White blood cells are produced in the bone marrow from hematopoietic stem cells. Once mature, they circulate in the bloodstream and travel to tissues throughout the body where they are needed to fight infection or respond to inflammation.
