What is Eosinophils?
Eosinophils are a type of white blood cell that plays an important role in your immune system. They are part of a group called granulocytes and are named for their bright pink appearance when stained with the acidic dye eosin.
Eosinophils normally make up about 1-5% of your total white blood cells. They are especially important for fighting parasitic infections and are also involved in allergic reactions and inflammation.
The eosinophil count is measured as part of a complete blood count (CBC) with differential. A normal absolute eosinophil count is typically between 30 and 500 cells per microliter of blood.
Where Does Eosinophils Come From?
Eosinophils are produced in the bone marrow from myeloid precursor cells. Their development is primarily controlled by the cytokine interleukin-5 (IL-5), along with IL-3 and GM-CSF. Once mature, they are released into the bloodstream and can migrate to tissues throughout the body.
