What is Basophils?
Basophils are a type of white blood cell that plays an important role in your immune system, particularly in allergic reactions and inflammation.
They are the least common type of white blood cell, making up less than 1% of your total white blood cells. A normal basophil count is typically 0 to 300 cells per microliter of blood, or about 0.5% to 1% of all white blood cells.
Basophils are granulocytes, meaning they contain granules filled with chemical substances like histamine and heparin that are released during immune responses.
Where Does Basophils Come From?
Basophils are produced in the bone marrow from myeloid stem cells. After maturing, they enter the bloodstream where they circulate for a short time (a few hours to a few days) before migrating to tissues when needed.
