What is Lymphocytes?

Lymphocytes are a type of white blood cell that plays a central role in your immune system. They help your body recognize and fight infections from viruses, bacteria, and other harmful invaders.

Lymphocytes typically make up about 20-40% of your total white blood cell count. There are three main types: T cells (which directly attack infected cells and regulate immune responses), B cells (which produce antibodies), and natural killer (NK) cells (which destroy virus-infected and cancerous cells).

The lymphocyte count is measured as part of a complete blood count (CBC) with differential and can be reported as an absolute number (cells per microliter) or as a percentage of total white blood cells.

Where Does Lymphocytes Come From?

Lymphocytes originate from stem cells in the bone marrow. B cells mature in the bone marrow, while T cells travel to the thymus gland (located behind the breastbone) to complete their development. Once mature, lymphocytes circulate through the blood, lymph nodes, spleen, and other lymphoid tissues.
