What is Absolute Immature Granulocytes?

Absolute immature granulocytes (IG#) measures the number of early-stage white blood cells in your bloodstream that have not yet fully matured. These cells include promyelocytes, myelocytes, and metamyelocytes, which are precursors to mature granulocytes like neutrophils.

Under normal conditions, these developing cells remain in the bone marrow until they complete their maturation. When they appear in the bloodstream, it typically signals that the bone marrow is releasing its reserves early in response to increased demand.

This phenomenon is called a "left shift" and often reflects an active immune response to infection, inflammation, or other physiological stress. The absolute count represents the actual number of immature cells per unit of blood volume, providing a direct measure of bone marrow activity.

Where Does Absolute Immature Granulocytes Come From?

Immature granulocytes are produced in the bone marrow through a process called hematopoiesis. They normally complete their maturation within the marrow before being released into the bloodstream as fully functional neutrophils, eosinophils, or basophils.
