What is Vitamin E (Gamma-Tocopherol)?

Gamma-tocopherol is one of the eight naturally occurring forms of vitamin E, a group of fat-soluble antioxidants. While alpha-tocopherol is the predominant form in human tissues, gamma-tocopherol is the major form consumed in the American diet through corn and soybean oils.

Gamma-tocopherol is the second most abundant vitamin E form in blood and tissues. Serum levels in the United States are typically 2-6 times higher than in European populations due to differences in dietary oil consumption.

Unlike alpha-tocopherol, gamma-tocopherol has unique properties that allow it to neutralize reactive nitrogen species in addition to reactive oxygen species. It is more rapidly metabolized than alpha-tocopherol and excreted primarily through the kidneys.

Where Does Vitamin E (Gamma-Tocopherol) Come From?

Gamma-tocopherol is obtained entirely from the diet. It is abundant in corn oil, soybean oil, canola oil, walnuts, pecans, pistachios, and sesame seeds. After absorption in the small intestine, it is transported in plasma lipoproteins but is preferentially metabolized by the liver rather than retained like alpha-tocopherol.
