What is Albumin, Urine?
Urine albumin measures the amount of albumin protein in your urine. Albumin is the most abundant protein in your blood and normally stays there because healthy kidneys filter out waste while keeping important proteins in your bloodstream.
When kidneys are damaged, their filters (called glomeruli) can allow albumin to leak into the urine. This condition is called albuminuria or proteinuria. Even small amounts of albumin in the urine can be an early warning sign of kidney problems.
Results are typically reported as the urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (uACR), which compares albumin to creatinine (a muscle waste product) to estimate your daily albumin excretion from a single urine sample.
Where Does Albumin, Urine Come From?
Albumin is produced by the liver and circulates in the blood. It normally does not pass through the kidney's filtering units (glomeruli). When these filters are damaged, albumin leaks from the blood into the urine.
