What is Coenzyme Q10?
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), also known as ubiquinone or ubiquinol, is a fat-soluble, vitamin-like molecule found naturally in every cell of your body. It plays a central role in energy production within the mitochondria.
CoQ10 exists in two forms: the oxidized form (ubiquinone) and the reduced form (ubiquinol). These forms are interconvertible, and both are needed for normal cellular function.
A blood test for CoQ10 measures the total concentration in serum or plasma. Because CoQ10 is carried in lipoproteins, levels tend to track with cholesterol, so some labs also report a CoQ10-to-cholesterol ratio for more accurate interpretation.
Where Does Coenzyme Q10 Come From?
About 75% of CoQ10 is made by the body's own cells through the mevalonate pathway (the same pathway used to make cholesterol). The remaining 25% comes from dietary sources such as organ meats, oily fish, nuts, and certain vegetables. It concentrates in tissues with the highest energy demands, including the heart, liver, kidneys, and skeletal muscle.
