What is Copper?
Copper is an essential trace mineral that your body needs in small amounts for many important functions. A serum copper test measures the amount of copper circulating in your blood.
About 90-95% of copper in your blood is bound to a protein called ceruloplasmin, which is made in the liver. The remaining 5-10% is loosely bound to albumin or exists as free copper.
Copper testing is often ordered alongside ceruloplasmin to evaluate copper metabolism and help diagnose conditions like Wilson disease or copper deficiency.
Where Does Copper Come From?
Copper is obtained from dietary sources including shellfish, nuts, seeds, organ meats, whole grains, and dark chocolate. It is absorbed in the small intestine and transported to the liver, where it is incorporated into ceruloplasmin and released into the bloodstream.
