What is Iron?

Serum iron measures the amount of iron circulating in your blood that is bound to the transport protein transferrin. It reflects how much iron is available to be delivered to tissues for use.

About 70% of your body's iron is found in red blood cells as part of hemoglobin, with the remaining 30% stored as ferritin and hemosiderin in the liver, spleen, and bone marrow.

Serum iron is best interpreted alongside other iron markers such as ferritin, total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), and transferrin saturation, as iron levels alone can fluctuate throughout the day and be affected by recent meals.

Where Does Iron Come From?

Iron is absorbed from food in the duodenum (first part of the small intestine) and transported in the blood bound to transferrin. The body tightly regulates iron levels since it has limited ability to excrete excess iron.
