What is Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)?

Vitamin B2, also known as riboflavin, is a water-soluble B vitamin essential for energy production and cellular function. It serves as the building block for two major coenzymes: flavin mononucleotide (FMN) and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD).

These coenzymes participate in hundreds of reactions throughout the body, including the metabolism of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates into usable energy. FMN and FAD are also required for the proper metabolism of other B vitamins, including niacin (B3), vitamin B6, and folate.

Unlike fat-soluble vitamins, riboflavin is not stored in large amounts in the body. Excess intake is excreted in the urine, which can cause a characteristic bright yellow color. This means riboflavin must be consumed regularly through diet or supplements.

Where Does Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) Come From?

Riboflavin is obtained primarily from dietary sources including milk, dairy products, eggs, meat (especially organ meats like liver), fish, nuts, and enriched cereals and grains. Small amounts are also produced by bacteria in the gut, but not enough to meet daily needs.
