IGF-1 mediates many of the effects of growth hormone (GH) in your body. While GH levels fluctuate throughout the day, IGF-1 remains relatively stable, making it a more reliable marker for assessing average GH activity.

More than 90% of IGF-1 circulates bound to carrier proteins called IGF binding proteins (IGFBPs), with IGFBP-3 being the most abundant. This binding extends IGF-1's half-life and regulates its availability to tissues.

IGF-1 is produced primarily by the liver in response to growth hormone stimulation. It is also made locally in many other tissues including muscle, bone, and brain.
