What is Iodine?
Iodine is an essential trace mineral that your body cannot produce on its own. You must obtain it through food or supplements.
Your thyroid gland uses iodine to produce thyroid hormones, specifically thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). These hormones regulate metabolism, energy production, growth, and many other body functions.
Over 90% of iodine consumed is excreted in the urine, making urinary iodine concentration a reliable indicator of recent iodine intake and overall iodine status.
Where Does Iodine Come From?
Iodine is obtained entirely from dietary sources. It occurs naturally in seawater and is present in seafood, seaweed, dairy products, eggs, and iodized salt. The thyroid gland concentrates iodine from the blood, trapping approximately 80% of absorbed iodine for hormone production.
