What is Chromogranin A?
Chromogranin A (CgA) is an acidic protein found in the secretory granules of neuroendocrine cells throughout your body. These specialized cells have properties of both nerve cells and hormone-producing cells.
CgA is stored alongside hormones and released into the bloodstream when neuroendocrine cells are activated. It belongs to the granin family of proteins, which help regulate the release of hormones and other signaling molecules.
This protein is primarily used as a tumor marker for neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). When these tumors develop, they often produce elevated amounts of CgA, making it useful for monitoring disease progression and treatment response.
Where Does Chromogranin A Come From?
Chromogranin A is produced by neuroendocrine cells located throughout the body, including the adrenal glands, gastrointestinal tract (particularly enterochromaffin cells), pancreas, lungs, thyroid, and pituitary gland.
