What is Dihydrotestosterone (DHT)?
Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a potent androgen hormone derived from testosterone. It is formed when the enzyme 5-alpha reductase converts testosterone to DHT in certain tissues.
DHT is approximately 3 to 5 times more potent than testosterone and binds more strongly to androgen receptors. About 10% of testosterone is converted to DHT daily in adults.
Circulating DHT levels are about 7 to 10 times lower than testosterone levels in men. However, in certain tissues like the prostate, local DHT concentrations can be 5 to 10 times higher than testosterone due to local enzyme activity.
Where Does Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) Come From?
DHT is produced primarily in the prostate, skin, hair follicles, liver, and adrenal glands through the conversion of testosterone by the enzyme 5-alpha reductase. The testes (men) and ovaries (women) produce the testosterone precursor.
