What is Aldosterone?

Aldosterone is a steroid hormone produced by the outer layer of the adrenal glands (the zona glomerulosa). It is the body's main mineralocorticoid, meaning it regulates mineral and water balance.

Aldosterone works primarily on the kidneys to increase sodium reabsorption and potassium excretion. This process controls fluid balance and blood volume, which directly affects blood pressure.

Aldosterone is part of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), a complex hormone cascade that responds to changes in blood pressure, blood volume, and sodium levels. When blood pressure drops or sodium is low, the kidneys release renin, which triggers a chain of reactions that ultimately stimulates aldosterone release.

Where Does Aldosterone Come From?

Aldosterone is produced exclusively in the zona glomerulosa, the outermost layer of the adrenal cortex in the adrenal glands, which sit on top of each kidney. Production is regulated primarily by the renin-angiotensin system and blood potassium levels.
