What is Platelet Large Cell Count (P-LCC)?
Platelet large cell count (P-LCC) is the absolute number of platelets in your blood that are larger than 12 femtolitres (fL) in volume. It is reported as part of the complete blood count (CBC) by automated hematology analyzers.
Newly produced platelets tend to be larger than older ones, so a higher P-LCC generally reflects increased platelet production or turnover. Large platelets are also more metabolically active, containing more granules and surface receptors involved in clotting.
P-LCC is closely related to the platelet large cell ratio (P-LCR), which expresses large platelets as a percentage of total platelets. Because P-LCC varies with the total platelet count, P-LCR is generally the more standardized clinical parameter.
Where Does Platelet Large Cell Count (P-LCC) Come From?
Platelets are produced by large precursor cells called megakaryocytes in the bone marrow. A single megakaryocyte can release 1,000 to 3,000 platelets, with younger platelets being larger and more active than mature ones.
