What is Platelet Count?

A platelet count measures the number of platelets (thrombocytes) in your blood. Platelets are tiny, colorless cell fragments produced in the bone marrow that play a critical role in blood clotting.

When a blood vessel is damaged, platelets gather at the site, change shape, become sticky, and clump together to form a plug that helps stop bleeding. They also release chemicals that activate the clotting cascade to strengthen the seal.

A normal platelet count ranges from 150,000 to 400,000 platelets per microliter of blood. Low platelet count (thrombocytopenia) increases bleeding risk, while high platelet count (thrombocytosis) may increase clotting risk.

Where Does Platelet Count Come From?

Platelets are produced in the bone marrow by large cells called megakaryocytes. The hormone thrombopoietin, primarily made by the liver and kidneys, regulates platelet production. The spleen stores about one-third of circulating platelets and removes old or damaged ones.
