What is Monocytes?
Monocytes are a type of white blood cell that plays a key role in your immune system. They are the largest white blood cells, measuring about twice the size of red blood cells.
Monocytes normally make up about 2-8% of your total white blood cells. This equals roughly 200-800 monocytes per microliter of blood in healthy adults.
When monocytes detect an infection or inflammation, they travel to the affected tissue and transform into macrophages or dendritic cells. Macrophages engulf and destroy invaders, while dendritic cells alert other immune cells to join the fight.
Where Does Monocytes Come From?
Monocytes are produced in the bone marrow. After maturing, they enter the bloodstream and circulate for one to three days before migrating into tissues such as the liver, spleen, and lungs, where they develop into macrophages.
