What is Mixed Cell Count?

Mixed cell count (MXD) is a measurement that combines three types of white blood cells: monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils. These are the less common white blood cells compared to neutrophils and lymphocytes.

MXD is part of the complete blood count (CBC) with differential. It may be reported as a percentage of total white blood cells (MXD%) or as an absolute count (MXD#). The normal range for MXD% is typically 5-10% of total white blood cells.

Some laboratories use a 5-part differential that reports monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils separately, while simpler 3-part analyzers group these three cell types together as the mixed cell count.

Where Does Mixed Cell Count Come From?

Monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils are all produced in the bone marrow from a common myeloid progenitor cell. After maturing, they enter the bloodstream and travel to tissues throughout the body where they carry out their immune functions.
