What is VLDL Cholesterol (Calculated)?
VLDL (very low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol is a type of lipoprotein particle made by your liver that carries triglycerides through your bloodstream to tissues throughout the body.
Unlike most cholesterol measurements, VLDL is not directly measured. Instead, it is calculated from your triglyceride level using the Friedewald equation, which estimates VLDL as approximately one-fifth (or 20%) of your triglyceride value in mg/dL.
VLDL is considered a "bad" cholesterol, similar to LDL, because excess amounts can contribute to the buildup of fatty deposits (plaque) in your arteries. A normal VLDL level is between 2 and 30 mg/dL.
Where Does VLDL Cholesterol (Calculated) Come From?
VLDL is produced by the liver and released into the bloodstream. The liver manufactures VLDL particles to transport triglycerides (made from excess dietary calories) to tissues throughout the body for energy use or storage.
