What is Calcium Adjusted for Albumin?

Albumin-adjusted calcium (also called corrected calcium) is a calculated estimate of what your total calcium level would be if your albumin level were normal.

About 40% of calcium in your blood is bound to albumin, a protein made by the liver. When albumin levels are abnormally low (hypoalbuminemia), total calcium measurements may appear falsely low even when the biologically active (ionized) calcium is normal.

The correction formula attempts to account for this by adjusting the total calcium value upward when albumin is low. However, recent research suggests the correction formula often does not accurately reflect ionized calcium levels.

Where Does Calcium Adjusted for Albumin Come From?

Calcium is obtained from dietary sources and its blood levels are regulated by parathyroid hormone (PTH), vitamin D, and calcitonin, working together with the intestines (absorption), kidneys (reabsorption and excretion), and bones (storage and release).
