What is Estimated Average Glucose?
Estimated average glucose (eAG) is a calculation that translates your HbA1c result into the same units used by home blood glucose meters (mg/dL or mmol/L). It represents your average blood sugar level over the past 2-3 months.
The eAG is derived from HbA1c using a standardized formula: eAG (mg/dL) = (28.7 × HbA1c) - 46.7. This relationship was established by the A1c-Derived Average Glucose (ADAG) study, which validated the correlation using continuous glucose monitoring data.
Because eAG uses the same units as daily glucose readings, it makes it easier to compare your long-term average with your day-to-day meter results. However, eAG reflects a 24-hour average including times when you may not typically check your blood sugar, so it may not exactly match your meter averages.
Where Does Estimated Average Glucose Come From?
Estimated average glucose is calculated from HbA1c, which measures glucose attached to hemoglobin in red blood cells. Because red blood cells live approximately 120 days, HbA1c (and therefore eAG) reflects average blood sugar levels over the preceding 2-3 months, with the most recent 30 days contributing more heavily to the result.
