What is Cholesterol, Total?
Total cholesterol is a measure of the total amount of cholesterol circulating in your blood. It includes LDL (low-density lipoprotein), HDL (high-density lipoprotein), and a portion of triglycerides.
Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that is essential for building cell membranes, producing hormones, and making vitamin D and bile acids. About 80% of cholesterol is made by your liver, while the remaining 20% comes from the foods you eat.
A desirable total cholesterol level is generally below 200 mg/dL. Levels between 200-239 mg/dL are considered borderline high, and 240 mg/dL or above is considered high.
Where Does Cholesterol, Total Come From?
The liver produces about 80% of the body's cholesterol, with smaller amounts made by the intestines and other cells. The remaining 20% comes from dietary sources, primarily animal products like meat, eggs, and dairy.
