What is Chloride?
Chloride is the most abundant negatively charged ion (anion) in your blood and extracellular fluid. It works closely with sodium and other electrolytes to maintain fluid balance, blood pressure, and the acid-base (pH) balance in your body.
Most chloride in the body comes from dietary salt (sodium chloride). The kidneys primarily regulate chloride levels by adjusting how much is reabsorbed or excreted in urine.
Chloride rarely becomes abnormal on its own. It typically changes alongside sodium or bicarbonate, reflecting broader disturbances in fluid or acid-base balance.
Where Does Chloride Come From?
Chloride is obtained primarily from dietary sources, especially table salt (sodium chloride) and other salty foods. The kidneys regulate chloride levels by adjusting how much is reabsorbed or excreted in urine.
