What is Sodium?

Sodium is a vital electrolyte that carries an electrical charge when dissolved in body fluids. It is the dominant positively charged ion in the fluid outside your cells (extracellular fluid), where it is about 14 times more concentrated than inside cells.

A blood sodium test measures the concentration of sodium in your blood. The normal range is typically 135-145 mEq/L (milliequivalents per liter). Your sodium level represents a balance between what you consume and what your kidneys excrete.

Rather than reflecting how much salt you eat, abnormal sodium levels usually indicate problems with water balance in the body.

Where Does Sodium Come From?

Sodium enters your body through food and beverages, particularly from table salt (sodium chloride). Your kidneys are the main regulators, excreting excess sodium in urine while retaining what your body needs. Small amounts are also lost through sweat and stool.
