What is Magnesium?
Magnesium is an essential mineral that acts as a cofactor in over 300 enzymatic reactions in your body, including energy production, protein synthesis, and nerve function.
About 50-60% of your body's magnesium is stored in bones, with the rest found in muscles, soft tissues, and other organs. Less than 1% circulates in the blood, which is what this test measures.
Because serum levels are tightly regulated and represent only a small fraction of total body stores, a normal blood magnesium level does not always rule out deficiency. Levels may remain normal even when body stores are depleted by up to 20%.
Where Does Magnesium Come From?
Magnesium comes from the diet and is absorbed primarily in the small intestine and colon. The kidneys regulate magnesium balance by adjusting how much is excreted in urine.
