What is Vitamin B6?

Vitamin B6 is a water-soluble vitamin that refers to a group of six related compounds: pyridoxine, pyridoxal, pyridoxamine, and their phosphorylated forms.

Pyridoxal 5-phosphate (PLP) is the biologically active coenzyme form and is what most labs measure to assess vitamin B6 status. PLP serves as a cofactor for more than 100 enzyme reactions in the body.

Since humans cannot synthesize vitamin B6, it must be obtained through diet. Any excess is excreted in the urine, so regular intake is needed to maintain adequate levels.

Where Does Vitamin B6 Come From?

Vitamin B6 is obtained entirely from the diet. Good sources include poultry, fish, organ meats, potatoes, starchy vegetables, and non-citrus fruits. Gut bacteria may produce small amounts, but not enough to meet daily needs.
