What is Vitamin B1 (Thiamin)?
Vitamin B1, also known as thiamine or thiamin, is a water-soluble B vitamin essential for energy production and metabolism. Your body cannot make it, so you must get it regularly through food or supplements.
Thiamine works as a coenzyme (in its active form, thiamine pyrophosphate or TPP) to help convert carbohydrates, fats, and amino acids into usable energy. It is critical for proper brain, nerve, and heart function.
The body stores only about 25-30 mg of thiamine, mostly in the liver, heart, brain, and skeletal muscle. Because stores are limited and thiamine is water-soluble, deficiency can develop within 2-3 weeks if intake stops.
Where Does Vitamin B1 (Thiamin) Come From?
Thiamine must be obtained entirely from the diet since humans cannot synthesize it. Rich food sources include pork, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, and fortified cereals. Small amounts are also produced by gut bacteria.
