What is Phosphate?
Phosphate is an essential mineral found throughout your body. It contains phosphorus combined with oxygen and is measured in blood tests to assess mineral balance.
About 85% of your body's phosphate is stored in bones and teeth, where it combines with calcium to provide structural strength. The remaining 15% is distributed throughout tissues and cells, where it plays critical roles in energy production and cellular function.
Phosphate levels are tightly regulated by your kidneys, parathyroid hormone (PTH), and vitamin D, and are closely linked to calcium metabolism. When calcium levels rise, phosphate typically falls, and vice versa.
Where Does Phosphate Come From?
Phosphate comes primarily from the foods you eat, including dairy products, meat, poultry, fish, nuts, beans, and whole grains. It is absorbed in the small intestine and regulated by the kidneys, which filter excess phosphate from the blood.
