What is Non-HDL Cholesterol?
Non-HDL cholesterol is a measure of all the cholesterol in your blood that is not carried by HDL (high-density lipoprotein, the "good" cholesterol). It is calculated by subtracting your HDL cholesterol from your total cholesterol.
Non-HDL cholesterol includes all the potentially harmful types of cholesterol: LDL (low-density lipoprotein), VLDL (very-low-density lipoprotein), IDL (intermediate-density lipoprotein), and lipoprotein(a). These particles can contribute to plaque buildup in the arteries.
Many experts now consider non-HDL cholesterol a more comprehensive and reliable marker for assessing cardiovascular risk than LDL cholesterol alone, particularly in people with elevated triglycerides, diabetes, or metabolic syndrome.
Where Does Non-HDL Cholesterol Come From?
The liver produces most of the lipoproteins that carry cholesterol in the blood, including LDL, VLDL, and IDL. Dietary intake of fats and cholesterol also contributes to blood cholesterol levels.
