What is LDL Cholesterol, Direct?
Direct LDL cholesterol is a laboratory measurement that quantifies the amount of cholesterol carried by low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particles in your blood. Unlike the more common calculated LDL, this test measures LDL cholesterol directly using specialized reagents.
LDL is often called "bad" cholesterol because elevated levels contribute to fatty buildup (plaque) in artery walls. This buildup, known as atherosclerosis, narrows arteries and increases risk of heart attack and stroke.
Direct measurement is typically used when triglycerides are elevated (above 400 mg/dL), when patients have not fasted, or when very accurate LDL values are needed for clinical decision-making.
Where Does LDL Cholesterol, Direct Come From?
LDL particles are produced primarily in the liver. The liver manufactures cholesterol and packages it into very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) particles, which are then converted to LDL in the bloodstream. LDL delivers cholesterol to cells throughout the body.
