What is HDL Cholesterol?
HDL cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein cholesterol) is a type of lipoprotein that carries cholesterol in your blood. It is often called "good" cholesterol because it helps remove excess cholesterol from your arteries and transports it back to the liver for processing and elimination.
HDL particles are small and dense, composed of a protein shell surrounding a core of cholesterol and other lipids. They make up about 20-30% of total blood cholesterol in most people.
HDL plays a key role in reverse cholesterol transport, the process of moving cholesterol from peripheral tissues back to the liver. This helps prevent cholesterol buildup in blood vessel walls.
Where Does HDL Cholesterol Come From?
HDL particles are produced and assembled primarily in the liver and intestine. The main protein component, apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I), is secreted and then picks up cholesterol and phospholipids from peripheral cells to form mature HDL particles in the bloodstream.
