What is Glucose?
Glucose is a simple sugar (monosaccharide) that serves as the body's primary source of energy. It is the main fuel for your brain, muscles, and other tissues.
Blood glucose levels are tightly regulated by hormones, primarily insulin (which lowers glucose) and glucagon (which raises it). A fasting blood glucose test measures how well your body manages sugar when you haven't eaten for at least 8 hours.
Normal fasting glucose is typically 70-99 mg/dL (3.9-5.5 mmol/L). Levels between 100-125 mg/dL indicate prediabetes, while 126 mg/dL or higher on two separate tests suggests diabetes.
Where Does Glucose Come From?
Glucose comes primarily from the digestion of carbohydrates in food (fruits, grains, vegetables, dairy). The liver also produces and stores glucose, releasing it between meals to maintain stable blood sugar levels.
