What is Zinc?

Zinc is an essential trace mineral that your body cannot produce or store in large amounts. It must be obtained regularly through your diet.

A serum or plasma zinc test measures the concentration of zinc circulating in your blood. While blood zinc represents only about 0.1% of total body zinc, it remains the most commonly used indicator of zinc status.

Normal serum zinc levels typically range from 60 to 120 mcg/dL (9 to 18 micromol/L), though reference ranges may vary slightly between laboratories.

Where Does Zinc Come From?

Zinc is obtained entirely through dietary intake and is absorbed primarily in the small intestine. More than 85% of total body zinc is stored in skeletal muscle and bone, with smaller amounts in the liver, prostate, and eyes.
