What is Vitamin E?
Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant that protects your cells from damage caused by free radicals. The test measures alpha-tocopherol, which is the most biologically active form used by the body.
While vitamin E exists in eight different chemical forms (four tocopherols and four tocotrienols), only alpha-tocopherol is retained and used by the body. Other forms are metabolized and excreted.
Because vitamin E is stored in fatty tissue and the liver, true deficiency is rare in healthy people and usually indicates an underlying condition affecting fat absorption.
Where Does Vitamin E Come From?
Vitamin E is obtained exclusively from the diet and cannot be made by the body. It is absorbed in the small intestine along with dietary fats, then transported to the liver where alpha-tocopherol is selectively retained and released into the bloodstream.
