What is Triglyceride/HDL Cholesterol Ratio?
The triglyceride/HDL cholesterol ratio is calculated by dividing your triglyceride level by your HDL ("good") cholesterol level. Both values are taken from a standard lipid panel blood test.
This ratio reflects the balance between atherogenic (artery-clogging) lipids and protective lipids in your blood. A lower ratio indicates a more favorable lipid profile, while a higher ratio suggests a pattern associated with cardiovascular risk and insulin resistance.
A ratio below 2 is generally considered normal, while values above 4 are considered high. An optimal ratio is below 1.
Where Does Triglyceride/HDL Cholesterol Ratio Come From?
This is a calculated ratio derived from two components of a lipid panel. Triglycerides are produced by the liver and also come from dietary fats, while HDL cholesterol is produced by the liver and intestines.
