What is Apolipoprotein A1?
Apolipoprotein A1 (ApoA1) is the main protein component of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), often called "good cholesterol." It makes up approximately 70% of the protein in HDL particles.
ApoA1 plays a central role in reverse cholesterol transport, the process by which excess cholesterol is collected from tissues throughout the body and returned to the liver for elimination. Each HDL particle contains two to five ApoA1 molecules.
Higher ApoA1 levels generally indicate better cardiovascular protection, while low levels suggest an increased risk of atherosclerosis and heart disease.
Where Does Apolipoprotein A1 Come From?
ApoA1 is produced primarily in the liver and small intestine, then secreted into the bloodstream where it associates with lipids to form HDL particles.
