What is Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin (SHBG)?
Sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) is a protein made primarily by your liver that binds to sex hormones in your blood, mainly testosterone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and estradiol.
When hormones are bound to SHBG, they are inactive and unavailable for your tissues to use. Only "free" (unbound) hormones can enter cells and have biological effects. About 44-65% of testosterone in men and 66-78% in women is bound to SHBG.
SHBG acts as a regulator, controlling how much active sex hormone is available to your body at any given time. It has the strongest affinity for androgens (male hormones), binding DHT most tightly, followed by testosterone, then estradiol.
Where Does Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin (SHBG) Come From?
SHBG is produced primarily by the liver. In males, a related form called androgen-binding protein (ABP) is also made by Sertoli cells in the testes to support sperm development.
