What is Potassium?
Potassium is an essential mineral and electrolyte that carries a small electrical charge, helping to activate various cell and nerve functions throughout your body.
About 98% of potassium in the body is stored inside cells, particularly in skeletal muscle. Only about 2% is found in the blood, which is what is measured in a potassium blood test.
The normal serum potassium range is narrow, typically 3.5 to 5.0 mEq/L (mmol/L). Even small changes outside this range can affect how your heart, muscles, and nerves function.
Where Does Potassium Come From?
Potassium is obtained entirely through the diet, mainly from fruits, vegetables, legumes, dairy, and meat. The kidneys regulate potassium balance by excreting excess amounts in the urine.
