The normal serum potassium range is narrow, typically 3.5 to 5.0 mEq/L (mmol/L). Even small changes outside this range can affect how your heart, muscles, and nerves function.

Potassium is obtained entirely through the diet, mainly from fruits, vegetables, legumes, dairy, and meat. The kidneys regulate potassium balance by excreting excess amounts in the urine.
