What is Plateletcrit (PCT)?

Plateletcrit (PCT) is the percentage of your blood volume that is occupied by platelets. It is the platelet equivalent of hematocrit, which measures the proportion of red blood cells.

PCT is calculated from the platelet count and mean platelet volume (MPV) using the formula: PCT = platelet count × MPV / 10,000. It reflects the total platelet mass in your blood rather than just the number of platelets.

Because it combines both count and size, PCT can provide a more complete picture of platelet status than platelet count alone. It is reported as part of the complete blood count (CBC) on automated hematology analyzers.

Where Does Plateletcrit (PCT) Come From?

Platelets are produced by megakaryocytes in the bone marrow and released into the bloodstream. PCT reflects the combined volume of these circulating platelets relative to total blood volume.
