What is Hematocrit?

Hematocrit (Hct) measures the volume percentage of red blood cells in your blood. If your hematocrit is 45%, it means red blood cells make up 45% of your blood volume, with the rest being plasma, white blood cells, and platelets.

Normal hematocrit ranges are 40-54% for men and 36-48% for women. These values can vary based on age, altitude, and individual health factors.

Hematocrit is closely related to hemoglobin levels. As a general rule, hematocrit is approximately three times the hemoglobin concentration (in g/dL).

Where Does Hematocrit Come From?

Red blood cells are produced in the bone marrow. The kidneys regulate production by releasing erythropoietin (EPO), a hormone that stimulates the bone marrow to make more red blood cells when oxygen levels are low.
