What is HbA1c?

Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is a blood test that measures your average blood sugar levels over the past 2-3 months. It shows the percentage of hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells, that has glucose attached to it.

When blood sugar is high, more glucose binds to hemoglobin. Since red blood cells live for about 3 months, HbA1c reflects average glucose exposure over that period rather than a single point in time.

An HbA1c below 5.7% is considered normal. Levels between 5.7% and 6.4% indicate prediabetes, while 6.5% or higher suggests diabetes. For most people with diabetes, the goal is to keep HbA1c below 7%.

Where Does HbA1c Come From?

HbA1c forms naturally when glucose in the bloodstream binds to hemoglobin inside red blood cells. The amount of glycated hemoglobin depends on average blood glucose levels over the lifespan of red blood cells (approximately 120 days).
