What is Lp-PLA2 Activity?

Lp-PLA2 (lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2) is an enzyme that circulates in your blood, mostly attached to LDL ("bad") cholesterol particles. It breaks down oxidized fats embedded in the walls of your arteries.

When Lp-PLA2 breaks down these oxidized fats, it produces inflammatory byproducts that can damage blood vessel walls and promote plaque buildup. Because of this, measuring its activity in the blood provides a window into vascular inflammation and cardiovascular risk.

Unlike general inflammation markers such as CRP, Lp-PLA2 activity reflects inflammation specifically within the artery wall, making it a more targeted indicator of cardiovascular disease risk.

Where Does Lp-PLA2 Activity Come From?

Lp-PLA2 is primarily produced by monocytes, macrophages, mast cells, and T-lymphocytes. Smaller amounts are also made by liver cells and adipocytes.
