What is Gliadin Antibody IgA?
Gliadin antibody IgA is a blood test that detects IgA-class antibodies produced against gliadin, a protein found in the gluten of wheat, barley, and rye. When the immune system reacts to gliadin in susceptible individuals, it produces these antibodies.
This test was among the first serological markers developed for celiac disease in the early 1980s. While newer tests such as tissue transglutaminase IgA (tTG-IgA) and deamidated gliadin peptide antibodies have largely replaced it for routine celiac diagnosis, gliadin antibody testing may still be useful in certain clinical situations.
The test helps identify individuals who may have celiac disease or other gluten-related disorders, though a positive result requires confirmation with additional testing and often intestinal biopsy.
Where Does Gliadin Antibody IgA Come From?
Gliadin antibodies are produced by B cells of the immune system, primarily in the gut-associated lymphoid tissue. They are secreted into the bloodstream when the immune system mounts a response to gliadin proteins encountered in the intestinal lining.
