What is CA 19-9?

CA 19-9 (carbohydrate antigen 19-9) is a protein found on the surface of certain cells. It is a type of tumor marker, meaning it can be elevated in people with certain cancers, particularly pancreatic cancer.

Healthy people normally have small amounts of CA 19-9 in their blood, typically less than 37 U/mL. However, CA 19-9 is not specific to cancer and can also be elevated in various benign conditions.

About 5-10% of the population lacks the Lewis blood group antigen and cannot produce CA 19-9, even in the presence of cancer. This is an important limitation when interpreting results.

Where Does CA 19-9 Come From?

CA 19-9 is produced by normal cells in the pancreas, biliary tract, stomach, colon, uterus, and salivary glands. It is secreted into bile and normally excreted through the liver.
