What is Hemoglobin?
Hemoglobin is the iron-rich protein inside red blood cells that carries oxygen from your lungs to every tissue in your body and returns carbon dioxide back to your lungs to be exhaled.
Each hemoglobin molecule is made up of four protein chains (two alpha and two beta chains), with each chain attached to an iron-containing heme group that binds oxygen. In mature red blood cells, hemoglobin makes up over 95% of the cell's protein content.
Hemoglobin levels are measured in grams per deciliter (g/dL). Normal ranges are typically 14-18 g/dL for men and 12-16 g/dL for women, though values vary slightly between laboratories.
Where Does Hemoglobin Come From?
Hemoglobin is produced in the bone marrow during red blood cell formation (erythropoiesis). The process is stimulated by erythropoietin, a hormone made primarily by the kidneys in response to low oxygen levels in the blood.
