What is Albumin?
Albumin is the most abundant protein in your blood, making up about 50-60% of total plasma protein. It is produced exclusively by your liver.
Albumin serves as a transport protein, carrying hormones, vitamins, medications, and other substances throughout your body. It also keeps fluid inside your blood vessels, preventing it from leaking into surrounding tissues.
Normal albumin levels range from 3.5 to 5.0 g/dL (35-50 g/L) in healthy adults. The liver produces about 10-15 grams of albumin daily, and it has a half-life of approximately 21 days.
Where Does Albumin Come From?
Albumin is produced exclusively by hepatocytes (liver cells). The liver synthesizes about 10-15 grams of albumin per day, and about 30-40% remains in the bloodstream while the rest moves into the interstitial space.
