What is Beta-2 Globulins?
Beta-2-globulins are a group of proteins in your blood that are measured as part of a serum protein electrophoresis (SPEP) test. They represent one portion of the beta globulin fraction, which is further divided into beta-1 and beta-2 components.
The primary protein in the beta-2 fraction is complement C3, a key component of your immune system. Beta-lipoproteins (including LDL cholesterol) and some immunoglobulins (IgA, IgM) also migrate into this region during electrophoresis.
Beta-2-globulins typically make up about 3-5% of total serum protein, with normal values ranging from approximately 2 to 4 grams per liter depending on the laboratory.
Where Does Beta-2 Globulins Come From?
Beta-2-globulin proteins are primarily produced by the liver. Complement C3 is synthesized mainly in the liver and by macrophages (immune cells), while lipoproteins are assembled in the liver from fats and carrier proteins.
