What is Estradiol (E2)?
Estradiol (E2) is the most potent and abundant form of estrogen in your body. It is the primary estrogen during the reproductive years and plays a central role in sexual development, fertility, and overall health.
While estradiol is often thought of as a female hormone, men also need it for bone health, brain function, and reproductive function. In women, estradiol levels fluctuate throughout the menstrual cycle and decline significantly after menopause.
There are three main estrogens: estradiol (E2) is the predominant form during reproductive years, estrone (E1) becomes the primary estrogen after menopause, and estriol (E3) is the main estrogen during pregnancy.
Where Does Estradiol (E2) Come From?
In women, estradiol is produced primarily by the ovaries. In men, it is produced by the testes through aromatization of testosterone. Both sexes also produce small amounts in the adrenal glands and fat tissue.
